To listen, learn, speak and feel about Public Communication

Free screening of a film by Mark Birnbaum and Jim Schermbeck "The Big Guy – Tom DeLay’s Stolen Congress"

In a stunning 1994 interview, shortly after the now infamous Republican revolution, Tom DeLay sat down and laid out his vision for America: to destroy the Department of Education, HUD, OSHA, the NEH, the NEA, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy. His self-stated goal was to "completely redesign government".

The Big Guy – Tom DeLay’s Stolen Congress is the seventh in our Series on Public Communication.

This Mark Birnbaum and Jim Schermbeck documentary is the story of how Tom DeLay did that. It’s the story of one of the most blatant power grabs in the history of the United States. This film is a warning about how easy it is for democracy to be hijacked by a combination of relentless ambition and corporate millions.

Is the Congress “custom-made” by DeLay still providing votes for the DeLay agenda?

To what extent is the new Congress still following in the footsteps of the DeLay agenda?

Will it be possible to repair the damage?

Will the “custom-made” Congress take as many years to repair as it took in the making?

We’ll watch and discuss.

For an update on Tom DeLay check out the article “Is the DOJ (Dept. of Justice) Shielding DeLay?”: http://www.lonestarproject.net/archive/2007-03-22%20DOJ%20DeLay.pdf

where it says “in a television interview on NBC’s Today Show March 20, 2007, DeLay boasted “I have never been found guilty of any ethics charges…I haven’t done anything wrong.” . . . . and

Jack Abramoff’s plea agreement led to the indictments of DeLay's former aides, Michael Scanlon and Tony Rudy. Rudy's lawyers and the Justice Department's Public Integrity Section then reached a plea agreement in which, "Rudy implicated [former DeLay Chief of Staff Ed] Buckham as being intimately involved in a payoff scheme." (Source: Roll Call, June 26, 2006) Reasonable observers would expect that Buckham would be quickly indicted and/or reach a plea agreement as well. However, in the nine months since Tony Rudy’s plea agreement, no further action has been announced involving Buckham or DeLay.
